Backstory

Oleander Addams was born Robin Johnson, a name she despised, on August 1, 1998 to Samantha and Michael Johnson. Robin was always a quiet child, mostly found off by herself drawing or reading, with a cat or dog at her side. She excelled in her studies, mostly due to the lack of distraction, as she was not a very sociable child. Robin was unusual. She found great fascination in the macabre. She would collect dead insects and look at them with a magnifying glass. Studying their shriveled little bodies with great detail. She kept them in a jar in her bag. One day, while at recess, one of the boys went into her book bag and found the jar. The children all joined in pointing and calling her a creep. Robin just gathered her belongings and ran off to hide in the library. After that day, she lost all trust and faith in people and poured herself into her studies and art.

At 17, she enrolled in art classes at the local college. There she met Max, her art teacher, charming and handsome. She was smitten. And he was smitten with her, as well. This was a new experience for her as she'd never had any boys pay attention to her because, in their eyes, she was just the creepy nerd that everyone made fun of in school. But Max saw her differently. He praised her keen eye for art and her unusual sense of style.

Feeling more secure as her own person, she decided she no longer wanted to go by Robin Johnson. She chose the name Oleander, a name inspired by a beautiful, yet poisonous flower, and adopted the surname Addams from the European side of her family.

Upon her 18th birthday, having been groomed by him for over a year, Oleander and Max became lovers. She felt unstoppable with him at her side, as they discussed moving to Europe and opening an art gallery. That is, until his wife stopped by the school one day during class. Oleander was left devastated. She sank into a deep depression for well over a year. To battle the dark thoughts she was having, she immersed herself into her art & her writing. She worked on several commission pieces, nothing fulfilling, to bring in some money.

Journalism Career

After some time, she began to feel a bit more herself. She decided that she needed a new start. There was nothing left in her hometown for her. Oleander began researching cities and their art & literature opportunities. She found that the Weazel News station in Liberty City was looking for some fresh faces, so she withdrew all the money she'd saved, packed her bags & boarded a bus to the city. Oleander was now in a new city, alone. She was scared but determined.

Upon acquiring a junior reporter position with Weazel News, she quickly began to make a name for herself, covering a plethora of criminal activities as well as bringing light-hearted human interest stories to the forefront. After many months on the news beat and rising through the ranks to senior reporter, Oleander made the bold decision to start her own newspaper “The San Andreas Star Standard”. She utilized “The Standard”  to dive deeper into investigative journalism, uncovering corruption & exposing high level criminal activity. Unfortunately, Oleander found it difficult to find other like minded journalists willing to put in the hard work required for her business and she quickly grew fatigued from carrying the weight of the paper on her shoulders alone.

It was around this time, while searching for a fresh start, Oleander relocated to Los Santos and took a position as a freelance reporter for Weazel News. This time she was going to take it much easier, covering stories on a more casual basis. Joining forces with fellow journalists, George Sinclair and Jay Walker, Oleander found herself in quite a few sticky situations, creating enemies once again through her reporting. The threats were bountiful, however nothing out of the ordinary for a journalist.

That is until July 13th, 2022, when her friend & colleague George Sinclair was blackmailed by the Lost MC into attempting to kill Oleander. Taken to a dock on the north side of the Alamo Sea, Oleander was struck, by George, in the back of the head with a baseball bat and left bleeding. The nature of the injury left Oleander without the recollection of recent events. The police followed up on the case, but no one was ever apprehended for the attack.

Mayor Addams

Slowly but surely Oleander recovered and in September of 2022, after helping George Sinclair with his unsuccessful mayoral campaign a few months prior, Oleander launched her own mayoral campaign against Oliver Patterson. Though the campaign was hard fought, Oleander won the election by a landslide of 85%. During her inauguration ball on October 8th, Oleander was stabbed in her lower back by Esteban Carvonenza. Thanks to the excellent medical staff at Pillbox, Oleander made a swift recovery and was back in her office the next day, albeit clad in her pj’s.

During her term in office, Oleander was able to complete nearly all of her campaign goals, lowering the cost of medical care, issuing multiple new business licenses, expunging reformed criminals, & connecting farmers in Blaine County with in city restaurants. And as promised, Oleander forgo her mayoral salary, using the money to issue several grants to upstart businesses and individuals, including Jillian Carter, who created several works of art which grace the walls of city hall.

Oleander & Chester

Oleander had first met Don Chester whilst seeking an official PD statement on a story she was writing. Though she thought he was nice, well spoken, and handsome, she didn’t give much more thought than that, being far more focused on her work. The first time he caught her eye, in a non professional light was on June 4th, 2022 when, after a talent show in which she performed “The Hearse Song”, he left a note on her car. “Enjoyed your set, hope to hear more, D.C. x” Oleander smiled, took the note & placed it neatly in her glovebox.

It wasn’t until Oleander began to help Bryn Jones with the launch of his advice column, where Don’s feelings toward Oleander began to come to light, as one of the submitted queries was revealed to be Don looking for advice in his bid to woo Oleander. Oleander was delighted with this revelation and began to look at Don in an entire new light. And after they enjoyed their first date on September 17th, the couple never looked back. Their relationship flourished as they had quite similar aspirations and temperaments. Soon they found themselves homeowners, purchasing a lovely cottage style home in Mirror Park.

The Cartel

However, their peace & tranquility were disrupted when Oleander found herself on the wrong side of “The Cartel”. Using the Twitter alias “Veracity” , Oleander exposed, taunted and teased the massive criminal organization. Unending threats were made, however, in her audacity, she continued the taunts. For her impudence, she was taken by the Cartel on the night of December 5th, driven to a garage in Vinewood & shot in the head by the Cartel. Fortunately, the bullet lodged in her skull, and after a painstakingly long surgery, during which she received a steel plate implant in her skull, Oleander was placed in a medically induced coma and secured in the ICU wing at Pillbox.

On the evening of December 9th, an employee of the Cartel was able to bypass Pillbox security, and take Oleander, awake, yet heavily medicated, to an island shack near the lighthouse at Mount Gordo. There she was brought face to face with another Cartel member. About to be executed then & there, she heard a shot ring out. And the Cartel member dropped to the ground. Behind him stood the person who had taken her. She crawled to the corner of the shack, to take cover, the remaining man approached, lifted his gun & struck her across the face, knocking her unconscious and breaking her jaw. Oleander spent the next 3 weeks recovering, with her jaw wired together, her hair slowly growing over the wound in her skull.

Current day

After her recovery, Oleander poured herself back into her work for city hall. She’d spent her time out of office, continuing to serve the mayors who had followed her term, eventually rising to the rank of Chief of Staff for Bryn Jones. Oleander continues to work for the people, ensuring that the citizens are treated fairly and given every possible opportunity to live their best life possible. And now, with the threat of the Cartel in the past, Oleander has taken her near fatal attack to heart, finally realizing how much danger she had brought to herself and to Don. She is far more careful now, wishing to maintain her safe life with Don. However, the reporter in her is always watching, looking for the next story, a story within which, no doubt, more trouble awaits.
