Description
A driven, but flawed individual, who looks at a rule book and skirts it in order to serve and protects those who can't defend themselves. Is constantly driven to prove themselves above and beyond the point of rationality. Currently a detective of the LSPD as part of their Major Crimes Division
Early Life
Independence, and the yearning for it, usually should come in a person's teenage years. When they're able (and willing) to show that they can be trusted to perform tasks and get results. However, some are forced to grow up much quicker than that. Are forced forced to be the mature person in the room. Are forced to go without the one thing they so desperately want - love. For Atlas, this is his norm.
Atlas O' Brien was born into a turbulent family, already bulging from having four other children to handle. Being the fifth, it was always going to be an uphill battle pleasing his parents, with a father who saw him as a liability, and a mother who didn't know what to do with him. From an early age, life made it pretty clear to him that it was not going to be fair, easy or lenient. It was going to hit him like a bulldozer. It took all of three seconds for the other kids to brand him a freak, simply because he started school late. His teachers, always assumed that he wouldn't come of much - his history teacher always regarded him as a "tricky subject".
That all changed when at 18, he had enough, and didn't wait for his parents to kick him out on his backside. He enlisted as part of the Irish Defence Forces (Óglaigh na hÉireann) and carved himself out as a noted marksman during basic training. Having proven a good marksman, and passed the Army Ranger's Sniper Course, Atlas was sent to Syria as part of the UNDOF peacekeeping mission.
The Siege of Taliqriti
During his time as a marksman for the UNDOF mission, Atlas (a Corporal at the time) and his squad were sent to Taliqriti, north of the Syrian-Lebanon border in order to observe a ceasefire arrangement that had taken place between the Syrian Government and a group of insurgents that had broke out fighting a few days before. The date was the 18th of October, 2018, and became known as the Siege of Taliqriti, named after the town in which the incident took place.
Placed as operation overwatch with the regiment's Lieutenant, Atlas observed from a distance. His usual style at this point was to sit back and ensure the safety of his fellow men. Atlas probably supposed that the Irish flag flying with "UN" letters plastered everywhere would provide the necessary protection against anyone dumb enough to think shooting was a good idea. The BTR-60, firing it's cannon straight into the lead convoy's truck, didn't get that message.
Atlas watched on in horror through his sniper scope the events unfolding, as the BTR crashed through several walls and fired indiscriminately at any and all moving targets, cutting down several of his men. Several insurgents now sprang up from hidden locations within the town, trying to kill anyone standing between them and the humanitarian supplies that had been promised. Desperately, Atlas began laying fire at the weak glass window of the driver's cupola, hoping to stop the driver before the BTR could get away. He was successful in doing so, but the subsequent detonation of the explosives on board was the final icing on the horror-filled cake being presented to him. In all, 8 members of Atlas' squad never made it back, with several dozen of the regiment gaining life-changing injuries.
However, all who made it back from that day, including Atlas, carried with them a terrible burden of watching their friends die in the heat of combat, not knowing how to process it or reasoning why they were picked as the targets.
Return Home and Exile
When word of the Siege of Taliqriti came back to the shores of Ireland, plenty of worried parents, wives and children waited with bated breath for news. Those who were not so lucky, obviously inconsolable as they tried to pick the pieces of their lives back up. But all grateful for those who did survive being able to return home, and begin the healing process of what happened.
Not for Atlas. He served another tour until November 2019, when which he decided to return home and try to piece himself back together. A walk in the door and a cursing from the highest heavens saw to it that Atlas would not be welcomed back with open arms. His mother didn't speak to him, nor did his father give him anything but abuse. "Jadotville all over again!" "You should've fought back!" "Where were you when your comrades were dying in the fields of battle?! Coward!".
Atlas had had enough. At least the official line from the mental health evaluation form said, conducted by the doctors after he had been cleared from any wrongdoing, and his father decided to not press charges. Of course, his father did not like the fact he now had several counts of broken ribs and a broken nose, but after the years of abuse, Atlas decided he indeed did have enough. He knew at that point there was no reason for him to be there. No reason to expect change when the person in question refuses to even acknowledge you.
On a whim, and with a bit of hope, Atlas requested that he be discharged honourably from the Defence Forces, and allowed a move to America, where he felt a clean slate was waiting for him. He hopes that this will be his time to shine.
